Fashion Trends - Thanks Madonna

Madonna, who was also called the Queen of Pop, was one of the biggest beauty and fashion icons back in the 80s. Aside from her talent in music, every woman looked up to Madonna as her source of beauty and fashion inspirations. Madonna may have been known to push the boundaries of lyrical content and imagery but there’s no doubt that she’s also well known for reinventing her image and has been one of the most influential fashion icons of her time, setting trends that sent the fashion world ablaze. Here are some fashion trends we can all thank Madonna for.

Arm candies / arm party – go on Pinterest or Instagram today, browse for a little while and I’m pretty sure you’ll see a picture of some random fashion-obsessed girl’s arm candy. Yep, they’re all the rage and we don’t see the trend coming to an end any time soon but it’s not the first time stacked bracelets came to the fashion world. In fact, back in the 80s, Madonna used to wear stacks and stacks of leather and rubber bracelets on both hands, making the trend a worldwide phenomenon. 

Lace – we all know how pretty lace is as a fabric and though they’re really on trend today with lots of women, it not a new trend either. Madonna wore lace everything back in the day (in fact, she still does today) it wouldn’t have been so surprising if there was a shortage of the stuff. Lace tops, lace jackets, lace tights and leggings, lace gloves – these were just some of the lace pieces Madonna used to get garbed up in and many other women quickly followed suit.

Slogan shirts – so you think those slogan shirts you see lots of fashionistas wearing today are a new thing? Well, think again. Madonna was actually one of the first, if not the absolute first, celebrities to make slogan shirts happen. These are equivalent to the statement shirts we wear today with words like ‘#yolo’ or ‘Celfie’ on them printed. 

Crop tops  – these ever so popular staples at summer music festivals were first made popular by Madonna back in the 80s. They continued to be a trend in the 90s and again resurfaced a few couple of summers ago and they’re still taking the fashion world by storm.

Cloth headband – Rihanna and Cher Lloyd are just some of the most popular celebs to sport bandana headbands today but Madonna was actually the first one who made this into a trend back in the 80s. Back then, she didn’t limit herself to wearing just bandana headbands, she also wore other cloth headbands from bow bands to what seemed like strips torn from her bed sheet and it was the cheapest yet coolest thing ever.

Casual Friday - Basic Rules to Follow

Casual office attire has become increasingly popular as many employers adopt a more relaxed business environment. This is particularly true of jobs in creative fields, such as marketing, advertising, fashion and beauty, all industries in which professionals are encouraged to express themselves through their wardrobe choices.

But, creative or not, there are still some rules that apply in putting together the right outfit for work. Regardless of where you work, who you work with, and how many (or few) people you may see throughout the day, a professional environment should remain just that. So if you’re one of the lucky ones to have a casual Friday (or even just a business casual) vibe at your office, then these rules are for you — or anyone you may want to anonymously pass them along to! Read ahead and take note before planning your next work outfit.

No cleavage – Tame the plunging necklines and keep the cleavage for after-hours. At work, opt for more demure looks: crew necks, boatneck tops, button-downs, and peter pan collars are all great ways of making trends work for the office.

No miniskirts – You may want to show off the results of your regular workout, but knee-length should really be your aim for work attire. Add tights under a skirt that’s a few inches too short to add some modesty to the look without looking too stiff.

No ripped jeans – Boyfriend jeans with tears are having a moment, and those are really a great way to balance a top that may otherwise be too precious. But wearing them to the office comes off as sloppy. Instead, opt for a more classic pair with no holes or scratches. Darker denim is always a good idea for the office.

No cropped tops - Cropped tops are also a great new silhouette of the moment. But wearing them to work is a no-no unless you’re layering with a longer, more classic top underneath. Try adding a light button-down to make your shorter piece work.

No club heels – I’m the first one to praise high heels; the higher the better. But when it comes to the professional arena, something tasteful  should override a look you can take to the club. Some offices have rules about open-toed shoes, and others are more relaxed about it. But, regardless of their take on that, a lower, stacked heel always comes off more polished.

No sheer tops – Sheer may be a trending look, and it may even be chic and classy, but it really has no place at the office. If you do intend to wear a sheer blouse, add a full-lenth cami in a matching color underneath. But when in doubt, just avoid it.

No exposed undergarments – This is just good practice, work or not! Don’t let your undergarments peek out from your pants, skirts, or blouses! Keep it classy with clothes that fit properly and don’t allow anything intimate to show through.

Plain T-Shirt - how to wear

A plain white t-shirt is one of the most versatile pieces you’ll ever have in your closet. Boat neck, v-neck, round collar, or crew, the choice is up to you. You can never have too many and keeping them pristine is an absolute must for a timeless, fashionable look. Having a variety in your closet can make for easy dressing, particularly on days when you don’t want to think too hard about what to wear but still want to look chic. Add your favorite pair of jeans, a great jacket and some of these accessories to pull off casual elegance. Read ahead for some of my favorite style tips.

1. Printed Scarf – Add color, patterns, and current trends to an otherwise simple outfit with a bold printed scarf.

 

 

 



2. Dramatic Earrings – Frame your face with some dramatic earrings and let the t-shirt do its job as a simple anchor for otherwise sparkly jewelry

3. Statement Necklace – To bring the attention up towards your face, choose a bold, statement necklace over a simple white tee.

The denim on denim trends has been around for quite a while now and if you haven’t already tried it, you’re missing out. It’s a very cool look that’s perfectly wearable all year long. You could say it’s very much like doing a Canadian tux except that it doesn’t strictly have to be a jacket and pants combo. There are so many ways to rock the denim on denim trend and each one is truly gorgeous and fab. If you’re not a big fan of wearing denim tops, you can still rock the look by switching denim with softer and lighter chambray, especially for warmer days in spring and summer. The denim on denim look, also known as the double denim look, is a stylish way to put together an easy, laid-back and relaxed casual outfit though you can always dress it up or down a bit to achieve different looks too ....

There are so many looks that you can pull off using a button down shirt and it all just depends on the accessories that you wear with them as well as the bottoms and the shoes. They are super versatile and can be worn anytime, anywhere. A lot of women I know love a good button down shirt because it’s so easy to wear and it never goes out of style. It’s one of those few pieces that you can keep in your closet and wear all year long because they’re super flexible in terms of style and really easy to work with, too. If you’re building a wardrobe that you can use for the years to come, it would be wise to invest in a few couple of good quality button down shirts in various colors (granted that you already have the basic and neutral colors, that is). Here are some stylish ways to wear a button down shirt.
Cool and casual – if you’re looking for a foolproof way to wear a button down shirt, do a casual look. You can achieve this by wearing your button down shirt with your favorite pair of jeans. Classic denims and a white button down is a really popular combination during spring and summer. Don’t forget to finish up the look with cool and comfy shoes. Heels are great if you want to make your outfit look more polished but if you’re after total comfort, you can opt for ballerina flats or sandals for a girly look or sneakers for a more casual vibe.

 

 



Smart and sexy – button down shirts make a great addition to your work wardrobe. Go for a smart and sexy look by wearing your button down shirt with a figure flattering pencil skirt. Styling Inspiration: Leather Skirts

If you’re looking for a piece that you can wear that would let you keep your feminine style but also add a little bit of spunk and edge to it, go for a leather skirt. Leather skirts have always been a favorite for a lot of women during the colder days but you can definitely wear them during spring and summer as well. Leather is a nice fabric with a smooth texture and it’s the perfect piece to reach for if you want something sleek and posh. Wear it if you want to create an outfit that’s both edgy and girly or if you simply want to add that subtle sexy vibe to your look. If you’re not sure on how to rock this piece, check out these ways to wear a leather skirt.


Leather on leather – you’ve heard about the denim on denim trend, now why not try the leather on leather combo? This may not be ideal for summer unless you live somewhere really, really cold but it would make a really cool outfit for fall and winter. Wearing leather on leather always tends to give you that rock and roll / punk – ish kind of vibe but if you want to keep the ‘girliness’ of your look, just be sure to add something in the mix that’s soft, sexy or feminine like a pair of fierce heels or some lace .

 

 

 

Play with other textures – and since we’re on the topic of textures, why not pair your leather skirt with a top that has interesting texture as well? A fur vest or jacket would really look nice with a leather skirt for colder seasons while something like lace with a leather pencil skirt would be wonderful for warmer weather.

 

 

 

Try to stick to neutral leather colors like brown, black and gray. If you must wear something brighter, go for red leather. Any other color will make leather look fake and tacky. Wear your leather skirt with a top in the same color.
