How to Wear Blazers This Season

Cardigans are too relaxed, and jackets are too bulky to wear all day long. Blazers are just right! A blazer is a wardrobe staple that every woman should have. A blazer is so much more than an item of clothing that can be worn in a professional setting.
But now there are so many options to choose from!  Two jackets that are very popular right now are longer styles and the cape blazer. Here are two ways to wear them.

Pants for Your Everyday Wardrobe

Cropped wide leg pants have been everywhere this spring and summer. I’ve seen them all over style blogs and in magazines. They’re the newest “it” trend that’ll help make your outfit all the more fashion forward.

Check out these different styles below:

These pants are so chic and can be worn with almost anything. My favorite pairing? Some strappy heels. Or you could go for some oxford shoes like Gigi Hadid below. I love the way she added a simple black belt to her wide leg pants. It definitely makes for a unique style!

Fashion Therapist

There’s a good chance that what you’re wearing right now reflects what your state of mind was when you opened your closet door this morning. Besides practical wardrobe considerations, women often choose clothing based on their feelings.

Did you know that a British survey studied what makes up a woman’s favorite “happy” or “bad mood” outfits? Happy women preferred clothes that are “well-cut, figure-enhancing, and made from bright and beautiful fabrics,” while women in a bad mood gravitate toward baggy tops and jeans. Here are some tips on how to be your own “fashion therapist” and interpret what your clothes are trying to tell you.

(Jeans also made the happy clothes list, but ranked below a favorite dress, jewelry and favorite shoes.) Even when we need to wear a uniform, we often manage to sneak in an expression of our inner self. For example, a teenager in private school can choose to wear a pink cardigan, or a gray hoodie over her requisite pants and shirt, and her choice might indicate if it’s a happy day or a sad day for her. A working-woman may have her wardrobe dictated by her employer, but she may choose a beautiful jacket or a saggy old sweater to keep her warm on the way to work. Selecting the old sweater may be a result of feeling down when she left her house, and she may choose the jacket on better days.

In contrast, spending a day in drab, unflattering clothes may darken a bright mood. Why not try a fashion application of basic behavioral therapy? When you’re feeling bad, try avoiding an impulse toward clothes that reflect that bad feeling. Instead, reach for something that you would usually choose on a happy day. You may feel strange putting it on, but your mood may soon reflect your more positive fashion choice. We all like to seek refuge in our “bad day” clothes sometimes, just like we all need a big hot fudge sundae sometimes, but we can make these times less frequent and less habitual. Making an effort to treat yourself to your happy clothes, regardless of a sad feeling, reminds you that you’re worth the effort, and that you deserve to feel good in your clothes.

So, if you find yourself feeling sad and wearing a baggy top and unflattering jeans, go back to the closet. Put on some happy day clothes and maybe your mood will follow.

Closet Inventory

Do you find yourself turning to your closet and realizing that you have nothing to wear? None of your separates match, and your dresses seem outdated. If you have this problem, it’s time that you build a better closet with clothes that you can wear for a long time rather than looks that seem like they can only be donned until they’re out of style. Build a closet you can be proud of with looks you’ll love for a long time. Check out my tips for building a better closet.

Do An Inventory- Have a dress that you haven’t worn for a long time? As much as you want to keep it, it might be time to let it go. Send it to a direct-give charity or an organization like Goodwill. You can even sell those pieces you don’t wear anymore on apps like Poshmark or at stores like Beacon’s Closet. Make a profit from those pieces you once loved.

End Fast Fashion- Stop shopping at fast fashion stores. Your Forever21 cotton jersey dress may look good on the rack, but do you really think it’ll last the test of time? Fast fashion is a dangerous road to go down so stay away from those stores and be more willing to pay higher prices for pieces that will actually last.

Staple Pieces- Aim for some staple pieces that you can wear with more than one look. Get some nice button downs and some pencil skirts along with a good pair of jeans. These are pieces that you can build on while sticking to your personal style.

Create A Capsule- Create a uniform so you have go-to pieces. This way, you’ll never look at your closet and decide that you have nothing to wear. There are plenty of ways you can do this. I like to play with a color palette. Then, I buy a certain number of looks to build upon that color palette. Eventually, I have enough items in my closet to make a uniform for any occasion.

Refresh Your Wardrobe

Spring-cleaning came and went. You gave away clothes to thrift shops and consignment stores and now you’re left with everything else. You love the clothes in your closet. You sincerely do, but style-wise, you just haven’t been feeling up to it. Where’d the energy that you once had waking up in the morning inspired to style yourself go? It’s time to refresh your wardrobe and step out of your style comfort zone once again. Re-style and reimagine looks from your own closet, because who has time for a trip to the mall right now, anyway?

Get DIY Happy- It’s time to tap into your crafty side. Looking up DIY tutorials is a great way to help freshen up your wardrobe and turn old style staples into new ones. Cut off the sleeves, make holes in your jeans, just do what you have to feel inspired by style again.

Mix Separates- Mix separates that you haven’t worn before and rock them with shoes and accessories, you never thought you could rock. Give yourself a goal of mixing separates you’ve never worn together, at least once a week. Turn it into a habit and see your closet transform.

Try Out Clothes You Don’t Often Wear- We all have those dresses and jeans collecting dust in our closets. It’s time to dust them off and give them new life. Wear them once and while, lady! Feel good about your outfit

Add Unexpected Accessories- Add accessories to an outfit you normally wouldn’t consider. Add spikey studs to a floral, garden party look and add dark lipstick. Your friends will start to expect the unexpected from you.

Play Dress Up- As a kid, I had a trunk full of clothes and fun accessories and would play dress up and act out scenes in my head. Now, it’s your turn to go back to those days. The best aspect of style is that it allows you to be whoever you want to be. So go in front of your mirror and have some fun! You deserve it.

Dark Must have pieces for Your Fall Wardrobe

By the time spring comes to an end and fall comes into picture, bright and light colors start to fade and darker, warmer and richer colors start to dominate the scene. This is especially true for beauty and fashion. As soon as fall hits, you can be sure to see more of the darker colors and less of the lighter and brighter ones. If you haven’t already and you would like to, check out these tips on how to go dark with fashion for fall.
1. Create a darker color palette for your closet – of course, going dark for fall should start with the color palette you have in your closet. Ditch those neon colored dresses and replace them with sexy, vampy and dark ones. Go for rich and earthy colors that will make your closet look and feel warm and cozy.
2. Black leggings – black leggings are one of the most versatile bottoms you can ever have in your closet. They’re wearable all year round and with almost any look you can think of. They’re comfy and they’re stylish, too, plus they’re really inexpensive (compared to jeans) even if you get the really good kind. You can wear your leggings on their own during early fall and then layer them up with leg warmers as the temps drop and the weather gets colder. They make great bottoms for oversized and chunky tops, too, as they can balance out your silhouette well.

3. Dark floral print – floral prints are spring and summer staples but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them for fall too. To give your floral pieces a more autumn- friendly feel go for those with dominant dark colors. Dark floral prints can make you look girly and dainty just the same but they’re more fall-friendly.
4. Dark wash jeans – those blue jeans are a classic but for fall, why don’t you shake up your wardrobe and your usual casual look by switching it up and wearing dark wash jeans instead? Dark wash jeans tend to make you look slimmer, too, which is perfect if you consider your thighs as one of your problem areas. Dark wash jeans are just as versatile as regular blue jeans as well so you can wear them with everything in your closet.
5. Dark outerwear – if you’re not ready to sport dark clothes all day every day just, you can keep wearing your bright, fun and bold colors and top your outfits off with a dark outerwear like a coat or jacket instead.

Guide for Keeping Your Favorite Pieces Clean

For some reason, it’s always this time of year when it seems about time to get all those hard-to-clean special pieces looking their best. From your fave silk blouse to your only pair of leather pants, even your best investment pieces need a good cleaning every now and then. Take a look below for some tips on how to get even your most delicate garments looking great.

Your favorite shoes & boots: Treat all your favorites with a spray on protectant to repel moisture and dirt and treat your best boots with leather conditioner regularly. This will keep them looking great, even during harsh winter conditions.
Leather Clothing: When it comes to cleaning leather, try spot cleaning – but don’t rub with saddle soap or leather conditioner! (you could easily damage the leather) Dry cleaners that specialize in leather are the way to go with these prized items. Just want to give your leather pants a little refresher? Put them inside a plastic bag and throw them in the freezer overnight – they’ll come out fresher than ever. Not kidding!
Silk: always hang it and store in a cool, dry spot. If you’re going the dry-cleaning route seek out a dry cleaner who skips the harsh chemicals and goes green. If you’re cleaning at home, hand wash in cold water, a gentle liquid soap and hang dry.
Cashmere: Keep your fave cashmere looking great by folding and storing in a drawer – hanging it can cause it to end up misshaped. Some cashmere can skip the dry cleaner and can be washed at home on the gentle cycle – just turn it inside out first! Dry on a flat surface.
